Independent Bible Study on the topic of JEALOUSY by (me!) topps

im not posting on the topic because i have it figured out; im posting on the topic to help me figure it all out

***  JEALOUSY ***

the very first thing to come to mind for me personally, when i hear the word:

terrifying.   this is to say, that,  -without exaggerating (much), i was as frightened being under the verbal/emotional attack of a jealous person i knew, as i was having a cocked gun to my head by a complete stranger

scary!  and when i reexamine it on far apart and rare occasions, i wonder is jealousy the correct word?

but, when i put together my experience, and couple it with the story of cain and able in the Bible...

to process, that God allowed a murder motivated by jealousy..   this validates how scared i was; that my fear was justified.

and being on the receiving end; and experiencing how scary..  that alone inspires me to always examine myself, and if i myself feel anything that comes close to what i interpret as jealousy..   i check in immediately with God in prayer..

my jealousies are perhaps different than what i believe most people experience  -but common for rape survivors

what makes me jealous sometimes is when people have sufferings/pain/trauma that can be publicly shared and yield only compassion on the part of the listener     -as so many different sufferings/pain/trauma was shared on the voice..   but rape was never one of them.   -statistically, you can't have that many people, that many lives..  and not one rape survivor among them.  -so, us rape survivors; we know..

how sad, it is 2023, and still...

back to the topic of jealousy  -when i revisit being on the receiving end..  how do we even interpret what is jealousy vs. resentment?  jealousy vs insecurity?   jealousy vs. betrayal?   jealousy vs. competitiveness?    jealousy vs. envy?   jealousy vs. covet?    im going to pause here to look up some definitions:

jealousy:   envy of someones achievement and advantages

what is envy then?   resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities or luck

what is resentment then?  complex multilayered emotion; mixture of disappointment; disgust; anger

and we also have the Bible story of Saul being jealous (to the point of wanting to murder) of King David..

and then we also have the scriptures:  Exodus 20:5   -this scripture carries much more weight once you yourself have interpreted/experienced jealousy

i think the most common type of jealousy in life, in fiction, in general:  romantic relationship jealousy.

and so, in a romantic relationship..   i've seen where one -tries- to make the other jealous..

but i believe based on my own life experiences; those tactics are born from immaturity; insecurity; and/or an unhealthy desire to manipulate others

when you love someone; romantically..   and you have a healthy, mature love..   you will not intentionally make the other jealous; you will not intentionally belittle, or marginalize,  you just don't intentionally hurt the other; period.

you don't engage in activities of any kind which you know have the potential to stir jealously..

and you definitely don't intentionally stir jealousy, and then label your partner 'insecure' for taking your bait.

both robert and i talked on the topic early on, and talk about it occasionally.  we have practices in our relationship born from our individual experiences along the way, and the primary purpose is just to honor and respect the other with practices that build trust and security and confidence; not compromise them; not test them.  two primary examples:  and these are not fixed laws; there are exceptions acceptable to us both, based on love and wisdom and common sense, of course.. but, rules of thumb, let's call them.  1.  we don't entertain people of the opposite sex in our home unless both of us are present.   that is, i'm not going to come home and find robert sipping a glass of wine with a woman friend and carrying on even a casual conversation, and vice versa..   even if it is 'just a friend'.    -in doing this, we build trust, we build confidence; we build security; we build respect; we honor each other.    the 'why are you so insecure' is not a card either one of us play.   and, 2.  we mostly hang out with other couples, we don't so much have a bunch of single friends..  as we may have in our 20's, 30's..  mostly our friends at this point, and gratefully so, are husband & wife teams.  and robert and i are in the practice of keeping our text/phone communications respectful this way:  i communicate with the women/wives; he communicates with the men/husbands.   again, there are agreed upon exceptions, but he is not going to find me going back and forth in text or calls with one of his male friends..  even if it is platonic..  and vice versa.   we just deeply respect each other and our relationship; we nurture, protect and guard what God has blessed us with.

-my goodness, by my age now, i have seen so many different..    my exposure from every angle..

and i did turn to Joyce Meyer's Purple Book..   i so love how she organized it.. but, as with the topic of Death..    so too, is Jealousy, not in her table of contents..   darn it!  but, on a very brief search.. which i recommend to everyone:  you can just type Bible verses about jealousy and keep yourself busy learning for a healthy stretch

i will share here,  -materialistically, i guess i am just so fulfilled in my current life, it doesn't come up..  i remember our e-bike ride with my son and his love in monterey..    during portions we were surrounded by mansions..    my son had pointed one out to me..  and i said, 'i challenge anyone living in any of those mansions to be happier than i am write now'   -because i was having such a great time, being with my love, my son, his love, in God's gorgeous landscape, on a spectacular day..

***

let's return to jealousy, in regard to romantic relationships, because God is bringing to my mind/heart a recent conversation..      man/wife out on a vacation day of sorts.. and women who were intentionally flirting with the husband    -how this ruined an otherwise positive experience; and in fact, cut it short.

i'm going to share how i process that from this time in my life; a Christian perspective, what i've learned,

first:  there is no shortage of women who demonstrate that disrespect.  it seems to me immature; cheap; ugly, etc.    -that portion, if i were in the same situation today; i would 'give to God'   -what i mean, is that, i have learned through many years practice, when to apply 'battle belongs to the Lord'    i am not in a position to change the behavior/attitudes/egos/selfishness of people like that.  i let them be who they are; i stay who i am..

i would probably do exactly as my friend did;  -leave.

the best thing the husband can do,  -recognize when women are disrespecting his wife while feeding their own and his ego,     ignore them; kiss his wife,   -leave hand in hand.

i've seen too many times, when people place their egos in front of their relationship.  -reliable as simple math:  those relationships inevitably fail.

*****

true love will not create room for even unnecessary suspicions..  true love will build trust; build confidence; build mutual respect/understanding..  always honor the other over ego.  feed security; starve insecurity..

robert and i both showed up healed  -God first forever!  and God's signature is all over our relationship.   Praise God!  -the rest falls into place.

****

jealousy?   resentment?    -when i interpret i am experiencing those feelings; i rush to prayer!  i go over, repeat,  i have what God wants me to have  -each person is unique.

there is an area, which would ignite jealousy (of the resentment kind) in me, long ago..  a burn that would last too long!  i would have to really work at, via prayer..   work.at.it.    -replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts; with great effort,  but i would not stop trying..    catching the thought; replacing the thought..

and what took great effort and practice and discipline long ago, is now just shy of being effortless..

and now, i am only, very briefly, and only slightly irritated

-patents on undeserving; unoriginal products..        poo on you

i apply that same practice to any counterproductive/negative thoughts i observe i am having

****

so unorganized/random, i realize..

my take-aways regarding jealously

1.  cain & abel reminds us to take it seriously..      just how destructive it can be, left unchecked

2.  it is not a toy, not a game..    i would not intentionally stir it

3.  it is not productive or healthy    -jealousy is to our spirit; as poison is to our flesh

4.  our God is a jealous God..   i'm still processing the weight of that...

5.  jealousy's opposite:   peace * security * confidence

****

wait..  funny memory on the topic..   post divorce, and my ex has a new girlfriend.   i didn't have jealousy regarding my ex..  but! wow! to what happened inside me, regarding my children..

MY! CHILDREN...   i felt so territorial!   and without much care for how i looked, drove me and MY! CHILDREN to a walk-in professional photo place...   got our pictures taken TOGETHER..   hugs, smiles, i am their one and only mommy & me pictures...     bought a big package:  some for me, on my refrigerator/shelves; some for MY! CHILDREN to have; and pretty sure i put some magnets on the back of a few and sent MY kids with innocent instructions  "oh look, i happen to have a few extras you can put on your dad's refrigerator..."

i'm gonna go find those...   makes me laugh now...

fast forward:

Happy Lent Days for (me!) ~topps, ~writeousmom Wed. Feb 22nd - Thur Apr 6th, 2023

we have,

and then the greatest thing i ever did:

and i love my life now!  i am so blown away by how dramatically my life has changed and improved that i want to spend the rest of it glorifying God's name as a way to say "thank you! i love you!"

and, now, to my understanding lent is not in the Bible, it is a practice and tradition created by church leaders.  and so, i remember here, my own explorations:  always trying to figure out what are spiritual laws vs. church cultural/governmental rules & regulations, practices, traditions..

and i came up with my own definition of spiritual laws:  they are laws which apply to all of humanity, for all of time; no matter what age, income, generation, denomination, affiliations, etc.

love is a spiritual law, for example

whether you eat this or that, whether you allow celebrations or not; when, what, how..  whether you only allow men to do this, women to do that..  all of the distinctions between a baptist, catholic, protestant, luthern, episcopalian, (insert any number of Christian denominations here); all of the distinctions between denominations are church-culture-originated practices; not spiritual laws.

***

for this reason, i focus on the fruits of the spirit.  but i have already over-written on the topic.

****
and have also over written about not turning lent into a 'new years resolution' practice; and over-written about Jesus definition of fasting vs. the church's definition.

***

lent does lend itself well to framing a select time for further cultivating my relationship with Jesus:  praiseworthy, trustworthy, all merciful, all grace-filled, all healing, all loving; the chain-breaker, the pain-taker, the way maker.  i am so inspired to share what i found to be true:  Jesus came to save not condemn..  Jesus is not harsh n' hard, but gentle, kind, patient, understanding..  Jesus yoke is light.. Jesus is the source for our access to the holy spirit within..

i want to briefly share here, an analogy i shared with family in conversation:   computer hacker, vs. computer helper.    i actually had my computer hacked [we are going back many years] but i had my computer hacked before i had it helped..

what i mean..  what year? and i learned that someone could remotely problem solve for me, an issue i was having with my computer.  and that very first time, i talked to someone on the phone, gave permission to that person by way of passcode, and then watched as my cursor, in front of me,  was being moved and controlled by this someone else far away...   WILD!

and i've held it as an analogy:  the devil, satan, our enemy  -he is a hacker.  ill will is intended.. exploitation..  manipulation..   deceit..  he breaks in to kill, steal and destroy  John 10:10

Jesus,  Jesus will never break in; Jesus does not use force or manipulation or deceit; Jesus is by personal invitation only.. gentle; open; honest, true.   and that is literally all you need to do: invite Jesus into your heart, and the holy spirit is activated in your life..   John 3:16

i think it is crucial for me to share that the work the holy spirit accomplishes in any given life, is collaborative and does not happen over night.  Romans 3:23    1 John 1:9    Psalm 103:12

-but slowly, incrementally, glory to glory to glory, just as the Bible does say  -the path of the righteous does grow brighter and brighter   2 Corinthian 3:18  Proverbs 4:18

i write this from an ongoing due season..  Galatians 6:9

and speaking of analogies  -looking back, i used a pathetic analogy {square vs. rectangle} and missed a perfect obvious one; but i can make up for that write here and now.

when you hear people say there is no God [love], in response to injustice and suffering
that is analogous to saying there is no sun, in response to dark rain clouds and natural disasters on earth
Matthew 5:45             -temporary afflictions vs. eternal salvation..   2 Corinthians 4:17

****

and, via prayer, i am inspired [not obligated] and guided [not mandated] to spend this lent season retyping the book of Acts.  -this is how i do my best learning/understanding.   i have 2 different Bibles i'm sourcing; Joyce Meyer Amplified; Everyday, a NIV Bible for Teens:

Acts 1    Jesus taken Up Into Heaven

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.  After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive.  He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.  On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command:  "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."  Then they gathered around him and asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

He said to them:  "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and samria, and to the ends of the earth."

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them, "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky?  This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

Matthais Chosen to Replace Judas

Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city.  When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying.  Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.  They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, "Brothers and sisters, the scriptures had to be fulfilled, in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as a guide for those who arrested Jesus.  He was one of our number and shared in our ministry."

(With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.  Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language, Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

"For," said Peter, "It is written in the Book of Psalms:

May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,'

and,

"May another take his place of leadership.'

Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us.  For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection."

So they nominated two men:  Joseph called Barabbas (also known as Justus) and Mathias.  They they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart.  Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs."  They they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

2/25/23

2  And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all assembled together in one place,

When suddenly there came a sound from heaven like the rushing of a violent tempest blast, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting

And there appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were separated and distributed and which settled on each one of them.

And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words].

Now there were then residing in Jerusalem Jews, devout and God-fearing men from every country under heaven.

And when this sound was heard, the multitude came together and they were astonished and bewildered because each one heard them [the apostles] speaking in his own [particular] dialect.

And they were beside themselves with amazement, saying, Are not all these who are talking Galileans?

Then how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own (particular) dialects to which we were born?

Parthians and Medes and Elamites and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and [the province of] Asia

Phrygia and Pamphyia, Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and the transient residents from Rome, both Jews and the proselytes [to Judasim from other religions],

Crtans and Arabians too  -we all hear them speaking in our own native tongues [and telling of] the mighty works of God!

And all were beside themselves with amazement and were puzzled and bewildered, saying one to another, What can this mean?

But others made a joke of it and derisively said, They are simply drunk and full of sweet [intoxicating] wine.

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raided his voice and addressed them:  You Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let this be [explained] to you so that you will know and understand; listen closely to what i have to say.

For these men are not drunk, as you imagine, for it is [only] the third hour (about 9 a.m.) of the day.

But [instead] this is [the beginning of] what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

And it shall come to pass in the last days, God declares, that I will pour out of My Spirit upon all mankind, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy [telling forth the divine counsels] and your young men shall see visions (divinely granted appearances), and your old men shall dream (divinely suggested) dreams.

Yes, and on My menservants also and on My maidservants in those days I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy [telling forth the divine counsels and predicting future events pertaining especially to God's Kingdom]

And I will show wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth beneath, blood and fire and smoking vapor;

The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the obvious day of the Lord comes -- that great and notable and conspicuous and renowned [day].

And it shall be that whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord [invoking, adoring, and worshiping the Lord -Christ] shall be saved. [Joel 2:28-32]

You men of Israel, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man accredited and pointed out and shown forth and commended and attested to you by God by the mighty works and [the power of performing] wonders and signs which God worked through Him [right] in your midst, as you yourselves know--

This Jesus, when delivered up according to the definite and fixed purpose and settled plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and put out of the way [killing Him] by the hands of lawless and wicked men.

[But] God raised him up, liberating Him from pangs of death, seeing that it was not possible for Him to continue to be controlled or retained by it.

For David says in regard to Him, I saw the Lord constantly before me, for He is at my right hand that I may not be shaken or overthrown or cast down [from my secure and happy state].

Therefore my heart rejoiced and my tongue exulted exceedingly; moreover, my flesh also will dwell in hope [will encamp, pitch its tent, and dwell in hope in anticipation of the resurrection].

For you will not abandon my soul, leaving it helpless in Hades (the state of departed spirits), nor let your Holy One know decay or see destruction [of the body after death].

You have made known to me the ways of life; You will enrapture me [diffusing my soul with joy] with and in Your presence. [Ps. 16:8-11]

Brethren, it is permitted me to tell you confidently and with freedom concerning the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

Being however a prophet, and knowing that God had sealed to him with an oath that He would set one of his descendants on his throne, [Sam 7:12-16; Ps 132:11]

He, foreseeing this, spoke [by foreknowledge] of the resurrection of the Christ (the Messiah) that He was not deserted [in death] and left in Hades (the state of departed spirits), nor did His body know decay or see destruction. [Ps 16:10]                  ****tbc

Feb 27, 2023   -where was i?

This Jesus God raised up, and of that all we [His disciples] are witnesses.  Being therefore lifted high by and to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promised [blessing which is the] Holy Spirit. He has made this outpouring which you yourselves both see and hear.

For David did not ascend into the heavens; ye he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand and share My throne.

Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet. [Ps. 110:1]

Therefore let the whole house of Israel recognize beyond all doubt and acknowledge assuredly that God has made Him both Lord and Christ (the Messiah)  --this Jesus Whom you crucified.

Now when they heard this they were stung (cut) to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles (special messengers), Brethren, what shall we do?

And Peter answered them, Repent (change your views and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it)  and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself. [Isa. 57:19; Joel 2:32]

And [Peter] solemnly and earnestly witnessed (testified) and admonished (exhorted) with much more continuous speaking and warned  (reproved, advised, encouraged) them, saying, Be saved from this crooked, perverse, wicked, unjust) generation.

Therefore those who accepted and welcomed his message were baptized, and there were added that day about 3,000 souls.

And they steadfastly persevered, devoting themselves constantly to the instruction and fellowship of the apostles to the breaking of bread [including the Lord's supper] and prayers.

And a sense of awe (reverential fear) came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were performed through the apostles  (the special messenger)

And all who believed (who adhered to and trusted in and relied on Jesus Christ) were united and [together] they had everything in common.

And they sold their possessions (both their landed property and their movable goods) and distributed the price among all, according as any had need.

And day after day they regularly assembled in the temple with united purpose, and in their homes they broke bread [including the Lord's Supper] They partook of their food with gladness and simplicity and generous hearts.

Constantly praising God and being in favor and goodwill with all the people; and the Lord kept adding [to their number] daily those who were being saved [from spiritual death].

tbc...  Chapter 3

feb 28, 2023

3  Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour (three o'clock in the afternoon), [When] a certain man crippled from his birth was being carried along, who was laid each day at that gate of the temple [which is] called Beautiful, so that he might beg for charitable gifts from those who entered the temple.

So when he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them to give him a gift.

And Peter directed his gaze intently at him, and so did John, and said, Look at us!

And [the man] paid attention to them, expecting that he was going to get something from them.

But Peter said, Silver and gold (money) I do not have; but what I do have, that I give you: [the use of] the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!

Then he took hold of the man's right hand with a firm grip and raised him up.  And at once his feet and ankle bones became strong and steady.

And leaping forth he stood and began to walk, and he went into the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

And all the people saw him walking about and praising God.

And they recognized him as the man who usually sat [begging] for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement (bewilderment, consternation) over what had occurred to him.

Now while he [still] firmly clung to Peter and John, all the people in utmost amazement ran together and crowded around them in the covered porch (walk) called Solomon's.

And Peter, seeing it, answered the people.  You men of Israel, why are you so surprised and wondering at this?  Why do you keep staring at us, as though by our [own individual] power or [active] piety we had made this man [able] to walk?

The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our forefathers, has glorified His Servant and Son Jesus [doing Him this honor].  Whom you indeed delivered up and denied and rejected and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had determined to let him go. [Exod. 3:6; Isa. 52:13]

But you denied and rejected and disowned the Pure and Holy, the Just and Blameless One, and demanded [the pardon of] a murderer to be granted to you.

But you killed the very Source (the Author) of life, Whom God raised from the dead.  To this we are witnesses.

And His name, through and by faith in His name, has made this man whom you see and recognize well and strong. [Yes] the faith which is through and by Him [Jesus] has given the man this perfect soundness [of body] before all of you.

And now, brethern, I know that you acted in ignorance [not aware of what you were doing] as did your rulers also.

Thus has God fulfilled what He foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ (the Messiah) should undergo ill treatment and be afflicted and suffer.

So repent (change you mind and purpose); turn around and return [to God], that your sins may be erased (blotted out, wiped clean), that times of refreshing (of recovering from the effects of heat, of reviving with fresh air) may come from the presence of the Lord;

And that He may send [to you] the Christ  (the Messiah) Who before was designated and appointed for you -- even Jesus.

Whom heaven must receive [and retain] until the time for the complete restoration of all that God spoke by the mouth of all His holy prophets for ages past [from the most ancient time in the memory of man].

Thus Moses said to the forefathers, The Lord God will raise up for you a Prophet from among your brethren as [He raised up] me; Him you shall listen to and understand by hearing and heed in all things whatever He tells you.

And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to and understand by hearing and heed that Prophet shall be utterly exterminated from among the people [Deut. 18:15-19].

Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel and those who came afterwards, as many as have spoken, also promised and foretold and proclaimed these days.

You are the descendants (sons) of the prophets and the heirs of the convenant which God made and gave to your forefathers, saying to Abraham, And in your seed (Heir) shall all the families of the earth be blessed and benefited. [Gen. 22:18; Gal 3:16].

It was to you first that God sent His Servant and Son Jesus, when He raised Him up [provided and gave Him for us], to bless you in turning every one of you from your wickedness and evil ways [Acts 2:24, 3:22].

****   tbc  chapter 4  ***********

march 8, 2023

And while they [Peter and John] were talking to the people, the high priests and the military commander of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them.

Being vexed and indignant through and through because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in [the case of] Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

So they laid hands on them (arrested them) and put them in prison until the following day, for it was already evening.

But many of those who heard the message believed (adhered to and trusted in and relied on Jesus as the Christ).  And their number grew and came to about 5,000.

Then on the following day, their magistrates and elders and scribes were assembled in Jerusalem.

Including Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander and all others who belonged to the high priestly relationship.

And they set the men in their midst and repeatedly demanded, By what sort of pwoer or by what kind of authority did [such people as] you do this [healing]?

Then Peter, [because he was] filled with [and controlled by] the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and members of the council (the Sanhedrin),

If we are being put on trial [here] today and examined concerning a good deed done to benefit a feeble (helpless) cripple, by what means this man has been restored to health,

Let it be known and understood by all of you, and by the whole house of Israel, that in the name and through the power and authority of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Whom you crucified, [but] Whom God raised from our dead, in Him and by means of Him this man is standing here before you well and sound in body.

This [Jesus] is the Stone which was despised and rejected by you, the builders, but which has become the Head of the corner [the Cornerstone]. [Ps. 118:22]

And there is salvation in and through no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by and in which we must be saved.

Now when they saw the boldness and unfettered eloquence of Peter and John and perceived that they were unlearned and untrained in the schools [common men with no educational advantages], they marveled; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

And since they saw the man who had been cured standing there beside them, they could not contradict the fact or say anything in opposition.

But having ordered [the prisoners] to go aside out of the council [chamber], they conferred (debated) among themselves,

Saying, What are we to do with these men?  For that an extraordinary miracle has been performed by (through) them is plain to all the residents of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

But in order that it may not spread further among the people and the nation, let us warn and forbid them with a stern threat to speak any more to anyone in then name [or about this Person]

[So] they summoned them and imperatively instructed them not to converse in any way or teach at all in or about the name of Jesus.

But Peter and John replied to them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you and obey you rather than God, you must decide (judge).

But we [ourselves] cannot help telling what we have seen and heard.

Then when [the rulers and council members] had further threatened them, they let them go, not seeing how they could secure a conviction against them because of the people; for everybody was praising and glorifying God for what had occurred.

For the man on whom this sign (miracle) of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

After they were permitted to go, [the apostles] returned to their own [company] and told all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

And when they heard it, lifted their voices together with one united mind to God and said, O Sovereign Lord, You are He Who made the heaven and earth and the sea and everything that is in them, [Exod. 20:11; Ps 146:6]

Who by the mouth of our forefather David, Your servant and child, said through the Holy Spirit, Why did the heathen (Gentiles) become wanton and insolent and rage, and the people imagine and study and plan vain (fruitless) things [that will not succeed]?

The kings of the earth took their stand in array [for attack] and the rulers were assembled and combined together against the Lord and against His Anointed (Christ, the Messiah). [Ps. 2:1, 2.]

For in this city there actually met and plotted together against Your holy Child and Servant Jesus, Whom you consecrated by anointing, both Herod and Pontius Pilate with the Gentiles and peoples of Israel, [Ps. 2:1, 2]

To carry out all that Your hand and Your will and purpose had predestined (predetermined) should occur.

And now, Lord, observe their threats and grant to Your bond servants [full freedom] to declare Your message fearlessly.

While You stretch out Your hand to cure and to perform signs and wonders through the authority and by the power of the name of Your holy Child and Servant Jesus.

And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continued to speak the Word of God with freedom and boldness and courage.

Now the company of believers was of one heart and soul, and not one of them claimed that anything which he possessed was [exclusively] his own, but everything they had was in common and for the use of all.

And with great strength and ability and power the apostles delivered their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace (loving-kindness and favor and goodwill) rested richly upon them all.

Nor was there a destitute or needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses proceeded to sell them, and one by one they brought (gave back) the amount received from the sales

And laid it at the feet of the apostles (special messengers).  Then distribution was made according as anyone had need.

Now Joseph, a Levite and native of Cyprus who was surnamed Barnabas by the apostles, which interpreted means, Son of Encouragement,

Sold a field which belonged to him and brought the sum of money and laid it at the feet of the apostles.

***   tbc .. Chapter 5  ****

But A certain man named Ananias with his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property,

And with his wife's knowledge and connivance he kept back and wrongfully appropriated some of the proceeds, bringing only a part and putting it at the feet of the apostles.

But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart that you should lie to and attempt to deceive the Holy Spirit, and should [in violation of your promise] withdraw secretly and appropriate to your own use part of the price from the sale of the land?

As long as it remained unsold, was it not still your own?  And [even] after it was sold, was not [the money] at your disposal and under your control?  Why then, is it that you have proposed and purposed in your heart to do this thing? [How could you have the heart to do such a deed?] You have not [simply] lied to men [playing false and showing yourself utterly deceitful] but to God.

Upon hearing Ananias fell down and died.  And great dread and terror took possession of all who heard it.

And the young men arose and wrapped up [the body] and carried it out and buried it.

Now after an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not having learned of what had happened.

And Peter said to her, Tell me, did you sell the land for so much? Yes, she said, for so much.

Then Peter said to her, How could you two have agreed and conspired together to try to deceive the Spirit of the Lord?  Listen! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out [also].

And instantly she fell down at his feet and died; and the young men entering found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

And the whole church and all others who heard of these things were appalled [great awe and strange terror and dread seized them].

Now by the hands of the apostles (special messengers) numerous and startling signs and wonders were being performed among the people.  And by common consent they all met together [at the temple] in the covered porch (walk) called Solomon's.

And none of those who were not of their number dared to join and associate with them, but the people held them in high regard and praised and made much of them.

More and more there were being added to the Lord those who believed [those who acknowledged Jesus as their Savior and devoted themselves to Him joined and gathered with them], crowds both of men and of women.

So that they [even] kept carrying out the sick into the streets and placing them on couches and sleeping pads, [in the hope] that as Peter passed by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them.

And the people gathered also from the towns and hamlets around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those troubled with foul spirits, and they were all cured.

But the high priest rose up and all who were his supporters, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and being filled with jealousy and indignation and rage.

They seized and arrested the apostles (special messengers) and put them in the public jail.

But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and, leading them out, said,

Go, take your stand in the temple courts and declare to the people the whole doctrine concerning this Life (the eternal life which Christ revealed).

And when they heard this, they accordingly went into the temple about daybreak and began to teach.  Now the high priest and his supporters who were with him arrived and called together the council (Sanhedrin), even all the senate of the sons of Israel, and they sent to the prison to have [the apostles] brought.

But when the attendants arrived there, they failed to find them in the jail; so they came back and reported.

We found the prison quite safely locked up and the guards were on duty outside the doors, but when we opened  [it], we found no one on the inside.

Now when the military leader of the temple area and the chief priests heard these facts, they were much perplexed and thoroughly at a loss about them, wondering into what this might grow.

But some man came and reported to them, saying, Listen! The men whom you put in jail are standing [right here] in the temple and teaching the people!

Then the military leader went with the attendants and brought [the prisoners], but without violence, for they dreaded the people lest they be stoned by them.

So they brought them and set them before the council (Sanhedrin), And the high priest examined them by questioning,

Saying, We definitely commanded and strictly charged you not to teach in or about this Name; yet here you have flooded Jerusalem with your doctrine and you intend to bring this Man's blood upon us.

Then Peter and the apostles replied, We must obey God rather than men.

The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, Whom you killed by hanging Him on a tree (cross). [Deut. 21:22, 23].

God exalted Him to His right hand to be Prince and Leader and Savior and Deliverer and Preserver, in order to grant repentance to Israel and to bestow forgiveness and release from sins.

And we are witnesses of these things, and the Holy Spirit is also, Whom God has bestowed on those who obey Him.

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and infuriated and wanted to kill the disciples.

But a certain Pharisee in the council (Sanhedrin) named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, highly esteemed by all the people, standing up, ordered that the apostles be taken outside for a little while.

Then he addressed them [the council, saying]:  Men of Israel, take care in regard to what you propose to do concerning these men.

For before our time there arose Theudas, asserting himself to be a person of importance, with whom a number of men allied themselves, about 400; but he was killed and all who had listened to and adhered to him were scattered and brought to nothing.

And after this one rose up Judas the Galilean, [who led an uprising] during the time of the census, and drew away a popular following after him; he also perished and all his adherents were scattered.

Now in the present case let me say to you, stand off (withdraw) from these men and let them alone.  For if this doctrine or purpose or undertaking or movement is of human origin, it will fail (be overthrown and come to nothing);

But if it is of God, you will not be able to stop or overthrow or destroy them; you might even be found fighting against God!

So, convinced by him, they took his advice; and summoning the apostles they flogged them and sternly forbade them to speak in or about the name of Jesus, and allowed them to go.

So they went out from teh presence of the council (Sanhedrin), rejoicing that they were being counted worthy [dignified by the indignity] to suffer shame and be exposed to disgrace for [the sake of] His name.

Yet [in spite of the threats] they never ceased for a single day, both in the temple area and at home, to teach and to proclaim the good news (Gospel) of Jesus [as] the Christ (the Messiah).

Chapter 6    03/23/23

Now about this time, when the number of the disciples was greatly increasing, complaint was made by the Hellenists (the Greek-speaking Jews) against the [native] Hebrews because their widows were being overlooked and neglected in the daily ministration (distribution of relief).

So the Twelve [apostles] convened the multitude of the disciples and said, It is not seemly or desirable or right that we should have to give up or neglect [preaching] the Word of God in order to attend to serving at tables and superintending the distribution of food.

Therefore select out from among yourselves, brethren, seven men of good and attested character and repute, full of the [Holy] Spirit and wisdom, whom we may assign to look after this business and duty.

But we will continue to devote ourselves steadfastly to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

And the suggestion pleased the whole assembly, and they selected Stephen, a man full of faith (a strong and welcome belief that Jesus is the Messiah) and full of and controlled by the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte (convert) from Antioch.

These they presented to the apostles, who after prayer laid their hands on them.

And the message of God kept on spreading, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem; and [besides] a large number of the priests were obedient to the faith [in Jesus as the Messiah, through Whom is obtained eternal salvation in the kingdom of God].

Now Stephen, full of grace (devine blessing and favor) and power (strength and ability) worked great wonders and signs (miracles) among the people.

However, some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (freed Jewish slaves), as it was called, and [of the synagogues] f the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of those from Cilicia and [the provence of] Asia, arose [and undertook] to debate and dispute with Stephen.

But they were not able to resist the intelligence and the wisdom and [the inspiration of] the Spirit with which and by Whom he spoke.

So they [secretly] instigated and instructed men to say, We have heard this man speak, using slanderous and abusive and blasphemous language against Moses and God.

[Thus] they incited the people as well as the elders and the scribes, and they came upon Stephen and arrested him and took him before the council (Sanhedrin).

And they brought forward false witnesses who asserted, this man never stops making statements against this sacred place and the Law [of Moses];

For we have heard him say that this Jesus the Nazarene will tear down and destroy this place, and will alter the institutions and usages which Moses transmitted to us.

Then all who sat in the council (Sanhedrin), as they gazed intently at Stephen, saw that his face had the appearance of the face of an angel.

LVII Years Old (me!) ~topps

"Thank You! so much for my cards and gifts!!"  xoxo  love you write back

 11 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we do not become discouraged (utterly spiritless, exhausted and wearied out through fear). Though our outer man is [progressively] decaying and wasting away, yet our inner self is being [progressively] renewed day after day.

It is of great fascination to (me!); the process of aging for flesh vs. spirit.   -how, physically, each decade (given you live a long life), your appearance and abilities incrementally diminish, and how, simultaneously, spiritually, each decade (given you live a good long life), your understandings and freedoms incrementally increase.

and i have a theory, that as your flesh/physical being decays, it releases spiritual vapors in an ongoing way..

these are invisible to the human eye; but entirely experiential.

your essence is love.    you were made from it; born with it; to experience and to share

lives properly and well lived, in my experience and observation, are ones where you are perpetually identifying and releasing anything and everything that is contrary to love..

shedding and releasing..

until that is all that is left; pure love.

and i love where i'm at, spiritually, speaking..

physically, however..   when it comes to my flesh

the thing i seem to be doing perpetually, is noticing, and then grieving what wonderful things youth provided that aging seems to steal..

the elasticity of my skin!   when i am putting on eye make-up, and the applicator shifts my skin..  it just stays there and creates a new layer of wrinkle  -in no hurry at all to get back where it once belonged..

my teeth stain easier and require more attention..   my lips are thinner...

and i do remember laughing   -and laughing pretty hard, the first time i read Dr Maya Angelou describing her breast as she aged, 'as if they are racing to see which one can get to my hips the fastest'

but that was over a decade ago.  any laughter i can muster at the sight of my own naked body, is forced. /but i do make the effort.    and not with a current budget for head to toe plastic surgery, i have just started wearing a bra, day and night..   night and day...    if you wont get back up here on your own.. i'll have to force you

and there is a longer list..   and i go back and forth between grieving and acceptance, and day-dreams about plastic surgeries..

all the while aware, (and grateful) none of it matters in heaven.

the two physical activities i've been most surprised to learn i can do; and can't wait to do again and throughout 2023:    1.  bike ride in monterey, from el estero park to pebble beach for lunch, and then back.     2. climbing to mission peak in fremont.     /and i have already planned out, on our next hike to mission peak..  upon return, we will head directly to eataly for their rustic bread with real butter and a glass of red wine

i think, by doing what you can do, physically speaking, when you can actually do it..  you proactively prevent the regrets that might surface when you can no longer do something, and realize you missed (or passed up) the opportunity when you could have..     in short: do what you can; while you can

-skip a step running up 5 flights of stairs,  before you need handrails and another person helping you to navigate a couple steps.

Praise God!  Hallelujah & Amen
