initially learned this during my wine goddess era,
how they use rose bushes at the end of rows of grapevines,
not for the aesthetic value,
but because they serve as early warning signs..
if you see the rose bush showing signs of disease, you still have time to save the grapes.
in my opinion,
and observation,
and result of research,
and the reason i am livid every time i hear san jose leadership claim victory for 'getting homeless off the streets'
is because,
what we see,
is that yes, they do get a % of drug addicts, mentally ill, those who can't hold down a job, or be trusted by their own family,
they do get a % off the streets,
and they place them near otherwise hard-working, tax-paying, law abiding contributors..
and then the hard-working, tax-paying, law abiding, contributing citizens have their safety, cleanliness, civilized lives destroyed
THEY are forced to move; stores forced to close; children forced to change their routes to school..
i keep repeating.. we are not bringing them up; they are bringing us down.
it is the equivalent of seeing the diseased roses..
and then uprooting the diseased roses..
re-planting them throughout the vineyard;
and claiming victory for getting rid of the disease. -it is only spreading.

the new york mayor says the subway will be free...
i say, metro trains will be free.. free from urine, feces, stabbings, attacks..

in my imagination [after YEARS of very real efforts by so many, getting nowhere]
in my imagination, i just walk over,
"get this SH*& cleaned up! -yesterday!
have someone come get these... this... that guy sleeping over there in the middle of the parking lot
have someone come get all the loiterers off this property
get them to dignity acres emergency campground where they can shower & sh*& and eat like a civilized human being, until we figure out the next thing to do...
get some security guards here.. NO LOITERING, NO TRESPASSING, NO DRUGS, NO BEGGING, NO STEALING, NO THREATENING, NO PANHANDLING, NO LITTERING!!
-have animal control come get these stray dogs..
let's get this place cleaned up already!
have someone power wash the SH*& off these sidewalks...
get a crew to clean up the litter...
get this landscaping back in order...
cover up that vandalism.. paint over that gang graffiti..
and i just walk and point out the obvious, and bark orders..
and things get done.
dignity acres emergency campground, in my imagination, is already built and functioning..
this gives law enforcement and social workers a place to bring every single loiterer, panhandler, beggar, passed-out drug addict, mentally ill, delinquent...
and allows our shopping plazas, parks, neighborhoods to return to SAFE & CIVILIZED
I STILL cannot believe, in San Jose, California, of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,
in 2026...

store owners are still having to clean up human pee & feces off the sidewalks before they can open their stores..
and can't believe i have to step over a passed out drug addict in order to get inside a store..
or look at broken, cement walls, litter, trash, graffiti, broken down cars, vans..
and despite the pictures, calls, letters, emails, open mics at city council meetings, in person talk-to's at farmers markets with council members..
despite YEARS worth of efforts by the citizens...
NOTHING.
it is, in fact, by the leaders, by the owners... it is being normalized and ignored.

so, in that most recent book i read, the author suggested there is a goal to make humanoids, sentient.

i spend a lot of time -in awe, as a sentient being myself.
and i think, manufacturers of robots, specifically, humanoids,
they should be the most humble people among us.
i say that because.. it is when you are trying to replicate a human being; what a human being can do,
trying to get a humanoid to move this way and that, do this, do that..
that you most frequently and directly encounter just what a masterpiece each human being is.
briefly, we can visit the fact, each human being is unique; while humanoids are cloned [already, humanoids are not original, but inspired by God's original creation]
humanoids are mass produced; the opposite of unique from one another.
let's skip all that though, and cut to what.. to how on God's green earth, can human-beings, even being the masterpieces that they are,
how can a human-sentient-being make a humanoid sentient..?

currently, humanoids can say -anything and everything, but FEEL -nothing.
so to answer the question: what is a sentient being anyway.
a sentient being can FEEL; can experience, understand, self-observe; interpret and express 'feelings.'
a sentient being -feels happy or sad, experiences and interprets whether or not they are happy or sad;
experiences and interprets whether they 'feel' inspired or obligated;
experiences and interprets whether they are infatuated or in love;
experiences and interprets whether they can push through how tired they feel; or for safety and health, rest and regain energy.
human sentient beings experience the thrill of a roller coaster ride; or feel nauseous, and throw up the nachos they tasted and enjoyed and inhaled earlier..
human sentient beings can feel hungry; feel stuffed; experience being thirsty.
of great note: a humanoid can say things to a human sentient being, and cause the human sentient being to experience an internal reaction [ laughter, tears, anger, joy]
but a human sentient being can say things, any thing, to a humanoid,
and the humanoid can verbally respond; can even emulate in body language and facial expression, a response..
but not 'internally' 'feel' a thing.
humanoids: enormous vocabularies, activity; zero 'feelings'
humanoids can 'cause' human sentient beings to 'feel' things via something they say or do;
but human sentient beings cannot cause humanoids to feel anything; only say and do things.
consider..
to fall in love,
to make love,
make babies...
Human sentient beings are original, are masterpieces, made from, with and for love; for relationship.
humanoids are mass produced, made from, with, and for profit; -robot servants to human sentient beings. (both good and evil).
the greatest caveat in regard to humanoids/AI; they can say things; do things, with zero feeling attached.
the greatest testament to the human being as an original masterpiece; -being sentient; capable of love.

for me.. i cannot attach the word 'intelligent' to a non-sentient incapable of experiencing, giving, receiving love.
i can comfortably use 'knowledgeable' 'capable'
-feeling comfortable, vs uncomfortable, hot vs cold, tired vs energized, hungry vs. full, stupid vs wise, insecure vs confident, inspired vs bored... determined.. bold... brave... creative.. convicted vs condemned.. proud vs. regretful.. empathetic, compassionate, -apathetic, burnt out.. pride/humility; understand/experience, when your mind is in another place, but your physical body.. to feel nostalgic.. generous.. to discern, observe our thought life; cast down wrong thoughts; proactively choose righteous thoughts...
interpret whether we do, or do not trust.. interpret whether we really did forgive? are forgiven..
flesh and spirit... self-conscious.. clean conscience...
guarded heart, broken heart, hard-hearted, cold-hearted, open-hearted, tender hearted...
grateful.. at peace.. in awe.. touched by a genuine gesture.. genuine, authentic.. altruistic..

and why i think AI/humanoid manufacturers will end up being the most humble(d).
anyone who desires to replicate a sentient human being masterpiece.. reinvent love..

the most recent book i did read in its entirety is co-intelligence by ethan mollick.
2 major take-aways,
1. big YES.. be the human in the loop. we need humans in the loop.. we need to identify and prevent loops.. going round and round.. script and loop..

treasure hunt for originality; always.
the other big take away, is more of a reminder:
remember, when i told you about how history did not go?
it did not go like this:
there were a bunch of men in a room, and it dawned on them..
"i don't understand why we don't let women vote? let's go ask them if they would like to vote too..."

when i puruse and click on this or that: any AI appearing, AI sounding, AI anything.. any gotcha journalism; any tabloid looking/sounding.. delete; delete; delete, click-out, click-out, click-out.
as has been true my entire life: it would be a full time job to get to the truth of anything
i do the best i can with the restricted time i volunteer toward the effort.
and all of this, is nothing i can personally do anything about.
i mean my goodness, we are still, collectively, trying to get our local Safeway shopping center cleaned up, safe again, beautified; it is one, relatively speaking, very small corner in San Jose, California
one small corner shopping center being colonized by homeless, drug addicts, mentally ill, trash, vandalism, broken walls, neglected landscape, peeling paint, filthy sidewalks
and despite YEARS of letters, calls, efforts.. a neighborhood association born from the desire to save this shopping center, visits to city council, on and on, by multiple people
NOTHING.
we continue to watch its incremental demise and shop elsewhere.
so, part of the reason i do not invest a great deal of time on the larger world's issues,
why take in and overload heart, mind, soul on issues i, we, can do nothing about.
all that said and recognized, i will occasionally search out overviews
i found this one intriguing and informative; well paced and edited; i allowed it to register as potentially 'credible'
