he never spoke a word. by (me!) sandra, tvgp

I was home~schooled:    and the cat, who did not even speak one word of English, trained me to interpret his gestures and expressions in under three days.

what the cat did
what the cat nonverbally communicated
how I responded

***

strut toward my bedroom
"window time write now"
here let me get the door for you...

jumped on my bed
"... the blinds..."
quickly i turn the wand to open the blinds

stare at me
"up!"
quickly pull the cord so blinds go up

jump on window ledge, glance at pull cord then at me
"that damn thing. it annoys me"
immediately tuck the cord out of his way

look directly at me for one second and then out the window
"that will be all"
"may I be dismissed now, sir..."

***

and it is true.  I am allergic.  but that doesn't stop (me!) from eskimo kissin'; and that doesn't stop me from pet~sittin.

and speaking of pet-sittin'

I have dog only, multiple dog, multiple cat, and dog & cat sat for a few friends over the past couple years and...

in one home, due to a sibling rivalry, the cats needed to be in separate rooms.   -and so in separate rooms I kept them.  I brought one out at a time, to exercise and play..   feed, etc.     and, it seem to me the cat was pretty quick to figure out that when I teased it with a certain string toy...  it was ultimately going to end up in the room with the door shut.

the cat did not want to be shut in the room; it wanted run of the house, at all times.

but!

even though the cat had learned, after my first few successes, that if it chased the toy into the room, I would shut the door..

even though the cat began to demonstrate a reluctance by not getting too near the door anymore...

eventually...  her reluctance to go inside the room, lost against her stronger instinct to chase the toy.

so, my patience grew...

because I had learned also..   that

eventually...

***

and in my most recent cat~sitting adventure..     the backdoor was open for the dog, and, but..   the indoor only cat, got out.

where?

searched the backyard   -nothing.

what feels like a bolt of intuition hits me..    I quickly open the front door.    there is the cat, on the fence.

if I go to grab.. it will flee.

I tease it with a string that is on the ground...

it looks enticed. I'm optimistic.   I wiggle the string...

when I look up again..

there is a second cat on the fence, that looks IDENTICAL to the one I am pet-sitting..

??

I have no idea which is which..

I try to entice them both off the fence, and in the house..

if it worked, I was going to take pictures, send to owner, and figure out "which is yours?"

I wiggle the string..

when I look up again..   the identical twin cats dash down the fence and out of my visual field.

I call the owner, and try to mask my concern...

"There are TWO!  I don't even know which one is yours...  this is terrible.. I'm so sorry... and they ran..   I don't know what to do?!  what do you want me to do?"

and the owner said, I don't think, even if the door was open...  my cat would not go outside... look under the bed.. with a flashlight if you need one...  he is a good hider...

and sure enough..

the TRIPLET..     runs out from his hiding place under the bed.

I was suddenly so glad about being unsuccessful with the TWINS on the fence

and

if you ask me to...

pet sit.

I will.

but, i'm like,  Dear Jesus..      will you help me sell some of my art please...

amen.

Cerebral Hyperlink to The Owl Story -for (me!) sandra, tvgp

and so, it is that time again..   kids/school tours at alden lane nursery  -the mention of the owl..

and like a magnet; a very strong magnet, hearing the word owl lightspeeds the story; my experience,  to center stage of my consciousness

mostly I remember,  -write now..   how slow the owl blinked, and how I was drawn to mimic it.. and blink slowly myself, back at it..    and how this felt like some sort of communication

[nonverbal, like how the cat home schooled me without speaking one word of English!]

and I was pulled into the owl's world..      and everything, and everyone else

disappeared!

mesmerized & hypnotized! (me!) sandra, tvgp

literally. in that order.   -only moments prior I was dashing this way and that, to capture different angles of the kids on the tour   -with my eyes, for the future tour, as I did not have my camera with me

and when we entered under the old oak and they all sat in the plastic chairs under the canopy

I stood to the side.   and my eyes glanced across from write to left; left to write   -it was all new to me.   what were we here for?    and then I slowed down my glance and stopped to read..

    ... something about...      about birds...

and the kids were asked to be on the quiet side by the speaker..   and the speaker, I noted immediately, was experienced when it came to talking to young children..    I could tell by the way she leaned in and down, made eye contact, engaged them so directly with her volume and tone.

and perhaps on the first and even second glance my eyes missed..   because it was slightly tucked back, in the shadow and a bit camouflaged in the larger environment, but eventually my eyes

-locked- eyes with it.   I mean locked.    have you ever had that happen?   usually we glance at each other..   our eyes move a little when we talk and listen...   or there is a soft hold; polite in nature, that just lets the other know you see them.. you hear them..    you mutually acknowledge one another; that kind of thing

but when you lock eyes..    that's when your eyes meet and  -freeze.  and there is something that even surpasses a stare.   it is a fixation of sorts..

and me and this

gorgeous!   sensational!    amazing!    wow of a feathered creature, with giant golden eyes, and..

so quiet..   so still...     and yet so powerful in presence...!     what am I looking at here?

-and our eyes were mutually locked for the entire time these thoughts crossed my mind.

and I have no way to prove it, but..  I'm certain I didn't blink.   -that is, until

oh my Good God, ...   don't do that...

what a slow blink this gorgeous creature has!    part of me wondered if it wasn't in fact... not real.

something artists could create..     a life-like version...

but..   I slowed my blink down, and blinked back.    I was imitating...    and I found myself taking one or two more steps closer..

locked eyes. staring.  slow blinking.     and, then..    how close am I allowed to get to this amazing, gorgeous creature?     -and I asked a couple questions of the care-taker, speaker, that brought the creature to the nursery

there was effort required on my part to even break my eye-contact so I could talk to..

Nancy, I think her name is.    and, "what is this owl's name?"

and she explained..   as a scientist. she is a scientist.   -that, they do not name the owls.  not in a personal way, only identified with scientific category names

so, to my understanding, I was looking at

-I mean, more accurately, I had been mesmerized and hypnotized by

one of the largest owl's in the world. an eurasion eagle owl..  is how scientists identify it

and not, like

well, I just have to name creatures.   I am a poet, not a scientist.   we like to connect.

not just observe.   but nancy,

/and thank goodness I do not have to describe her to you as...

       Animalia                  Chordata

      Vertebrata

      Mammalia

      Theria

      Eutheria

      Primates

     Anthropoidea

      Hominoidea

      Hominidae

      Homo                                                               sapien

but, nancy,  -she explained the reason they don't name them, like pets, is because

well, they are not pets.   they belong in the wild world, and to the wild world, not to humans,

and so,

the not-naming is born from a personal science community moral code which is noble in intention, motivation and gesture:

responsibility. respect. reverence.

so, from their scientific perspective; not naming is a form of honoring our responsibility to respect the fact we don't own them like pets

but we are responsible to protect them; which is a form of revering..

-that's my take on what she explained.

and what happen write about this time in our conversation, was that I turned around, and..

?

like, all the kids were gone.   and Anthony..   the tour-guide for that particular tour..   gone.   they had all moved on to the next part of the tour, and I was not even conscious of the fact they had all left..

20+ children! walked write past me..

I was so engaged, enthralled, mesmerized by this perfectly quiet and still slow blinking beautiful feathered oval shaped

-I locked eyes one last time.    I telepathically said:

you just hypnotized me!    -good job.      and then I slow blinked back a pleasure meeting you to the eurasion eagle owl and verbalized a big "Thank You!" to the kind homo sapien speaker/teacher/scientist

and then when hunting for where all those beautiful children went..

In Jesus...  Thank God Jesus has a name! name..   amen!

Frazier was the coolest cat I ever knew (me!) sandra, tvgp

and when it's time to say goodbye, our minds fill with a variety of memories..

the first memory to show up for me is, .. because I have a slight allergy to cats..   I couldn't necessarily pet Frazier like I was inclined.  We agreed to eskimo kiss instead..  and he seemed to catch on so easily.

My next very pronounced memory..  being home-schooled by Frazier in less than three days.

yes.  without ever saying one word, Frazier's body language and looks were so precise, and I was such a skilled translator apparently, that, in under 3 days, I learned exactly what to do

Like, Frazier would walk toward the stairs, and I knew immediately, I should rush up the stairs ahead of him so I could open the door to my bedroom.

He'd strut up to my bedroom door like I walk toward the door at a grocery store; with complete confidence that it would just automatically open

and after i automatically opened the door for him, he would strut toward my bed, and i knew immediately, I should hurry and open the blinds

After I hurriedly opened the blinds, he would jump up on my bed and keep staring at me

And immediately I knew I had to not only open the blinds, but pull them all the way up

"ta daa!"  you have a complete view out the window now

but then Frazier would look at the cord and back at me

-and I knew immediately!  that the cord was some sort of annoyance, and I needed to get it out of the way.

I looked at Frazier again, like, "ta daa!"   the blinds are open and pulled up all the way.  you have a complete view out of the window, the cord has been tucked away...

and I would smile at Frazier, and Frazier would look at me

and I knew immediately! and so I would say,

"May I now be excused sir Frazier?"

and he would turn his head to look out the window and I would leave my own bedroom, just like that.

***

I always left shaking my head..  how did he just do that?  He gets me to do the same thing every time and doesnt even speak a word of English...
