JUSTICE FOR SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT ACT 2009

original posting 09/10/2010.    repost inspired by obama's recent signing of the violence against women act:

justice for survivors of sexual assault act 2009

not my favorite type of reading for sure. -but let me reiterate.. my knowledge (& impulsive reaction) is that of a) victim~survivor & b) trained volunteer for tri valley haven

significant/relevant experience, but not enough knowledge to have knee-jerk signed the petition/link letter to congress available on marie claire website.

having talked with christine dillman from the tri valley haven, who i respect enormously

i'm slowing down.

need these questions answered:

of the rape-kits still untested... are they all from stranger rapes which would demand such testing (& immediately, i might add)?

are there a percentage of rape kits -where the perpertrator was known/identified through other means, making the rape kit unnecessary to begin with?

who discerns when/if a rape kit is necessary?

is everyone aware 80% rapes are by known perpetrators? that in fact, rape kits aren't even necessary for evidence 100% of the time

are our limited resources (funds, labor, time) best used testing rape kits that may or may not be necessary for evidence

or perhaps could our already limited resources be better applied toward:

understanding & prevention; specialized training for police officers, hospital staff & counselors.

to support in a myriad of ways the victim~survivor & their loved ones -in the myriad of ways support is needed for healing.

i'm much more concerned about reducing the number rapes; period.

still in conversation with christine... may be writing a different letter to congress for people to sign...
