"TARYN KAY DAY!" -no school: by (taryn kay!)

so i was talking to my daughter about how they might reduce the school year by 5 days in order to save money

$$

and she thought rather than just eliminate 5 days/adding 5 days to summer vacation.. why not ADD 5 no-school holidays. -give them each a name and person to celebrate, like how they recently had school off for martin luther king jr's birthday

and she suggested at least one should be "taryn kay" day, because she is, after all, the person who thought of it.

Off topic, but did you see this article?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/22/AR2009012204082.html

I recall "THE NAMESAKE" had many film shots in slums both in the United States in in India.

I still want to go to India because it's the people not the poverty that define a country.

kmg/bbf: -that is a great article.

when i have time (God please grant me time)

i want to share my thoughts in more detail about the movie

and about the great points made in the article

from my perspective/experience,

there is truth in both and all sides.

until i have more time.. (work early today)

an unfortunate/fortunate, but very predictable pattern for ALL MASS MEDIA

is that, by nature, we project on to the whole, the story of the few (or of a percentage)

so if we see a movie where great wealth is highlighted for a specific neighborhood

we might project that onto the entire geographic region

and the opposite is of course true; projecting poverty of a neighborhood onto an entire geographic region

this is especially true for people who do not travel a great deal, who do not have real life exposure/experience with different parts of the world.. where there experience knowledge is limited to mass media/news/school books,

-the reputation/perception of california, in some examples.. (for some)

sunshine, health, wealth, fitness, opportunity

when our homeless population, % of people living in poverty, high number of drug/alcohol addicted.. crime rates, on and on..

there are so many sub-cultures.. so many different lifestyles & experiences.. so many pockets wildly different from one another..

IN ONE CITY WITHIN CALIFORNIA!!

the spectrum is very wide

v e r y w i d e

but i find mass media does not successfully capture or communicate diversity

-for the longest time..

as a child here, watching the news about other places in the world

IT WAS YEARS before i realized some areas of the world had WEALTH/THRIVING BUSINESSES.. in addition to poverty

because it was ONLY the poverty the news showcased

-so, as an artist, a poet, a writer, a creative person

i appreciate talent/genius in storytelling when i see it

as a citizen drowned in mass media, and having some understanding of its manipulative powers

i'm suspicious.

i know not to project onto all of "india" this one (amazingly well told) story

the thing that has my awe.. about slumdog millionaire

is that i've come to learn just how hard it is to communicate traumatic life stories

in an artful way. maintaining truth, but without exploiting and without overwhelming

at the same time.. there needs to be entertainment value

at the same time.. it can't be so entertaining it usurps the pain and greater message

but it can't be too painful, because you risk turning off an audience all together

there is such an art to it..

such a fine art..

and in my opinion, slumdog millionaire MASTERFULLY succeeds in finding that absolutely just write balance of all things

truths, pains, entertainment, action, beauty, love, despair, hope, anger, power, suspense, sensation

relationships.. person to person, and person to life circumstance, and person to geography, and person to their age/time.. and person to culture..

and they landed it for EACH MAIN CHARACTER, plus.. so brilliantly within the greater scope of the entire story

i was just blown away

blown away!

what an accomplishment!
