it pours. by (me!) ~tops

the contrast!  of leaving our northern california drought and getting to see and experience:

the full, rushing, current of the Columbia River on my passenger side write;  heavy rains falling directly down on the road ahead; and rain plus waterfalls to my left  -all at the same time!

every conversation we've had over the past several years with friends and family regarding water was battling for attention and revisit in my mind..

-how i would LOVE to see a graph..  20 years worth.. state by state in the U.S.  because every hotel/motel that once washed every sheet, towel, pillow case, every day for every customer, whether it needed it or not... those practices are long gone..    not one hotel i've stayed in washes anything unless you specifically request it.   -and for my husband and i..   we never request any washing services until we leave..

-the amount of lawns that have been converted!  either to succulents, or very low water demanding native landscapes; or fake lawns...

-from just those two very dramatic changes, the water saving seems enormous!

i've just mentioned that the 'intended' water savings from water saving toilets or showers..   counter-productive..  an utter waste!  cut your losses and start over..   we were better off before

-and the instant! response i've received each time i've ever casually mentioned 'desalination'

"way too costly!     -Blah, blah..     environmental costs..  monetary..."

i always say and think the same thing:    do you realize how many things humans have invented over time that initially were way too costly..   but over time, we learn how to streamline, how to improve the manufacturing and quality and reduce the cost..      -but you have to at least get started in order to reach that place..

my husband talks a lot about dams..  being better stewards of the rain God provides us;     and he always gets the same response i do about desalination..          /insert grumpy, curmudgeonly voice here    "   way too expensive.. damage to the environment... "

oh!  thank you for asking Oprah..   here is what i know for sure:

water is, when it comes to resources necessary for human life and existence,  #1

i mean, it's write up there with air.

and i KNOW for sure, we already have the minds (the intelligence) to solve this problem

and it may be awkward and costly initially, but i also know for sure..

we better start doing something!

lots of people mention.. us included:  ' if you can pipe 3 million barrels of fuel per day between texas and new york..   [colonial pipeline]

why not water from up north, down south?

we all know this can be done.      -write.

and best we can all do, us average, everyday, layperson citizens..

vote for leaders who not only know it can be done; but will invest in making it happen.

   -amen.

agree w/this letter to the editor LA Times (date?)   -summary

states near the gulf of mexico are often flooded

       -southwest is suffering long-term drought

why not begin a grand national infrastructure project of building a water pipeline

-from the flooded areas to the drought areas..

genius.

***              really? in carlsbad?   -just learning...

and this is a great time to confess just how many of those conversations with friends and family over the years about water..   very passionate but without much research and knowledge.   -we each have our ideas and opinions based on random little blurbs we see, hear, read.  and certain people (like myself) who see one headline and spout off like they've earned a doctorate on the subject.    -these type of conversations have, and are and always will take place in coffee shops, donut shops, bars, restaurants, on park benches and at dinner tables   -laypeople with more heart than knowledge; politicians with more promises than action; students with more awareness than influence.

but...   water pipelines...   desalination...    dams...      the trifecta!

yes, please, thank you, hallelujah & amen.
